Accordian Caterpillars

Materials Needed

5" x 12" (12.5 x 31 cm) contruction paper strips
construction paper circles
glue
stapler
crayons or markers

Instructions
Have each student accordion-fold a construction paper strip ten times to make a paper with twelve flat "faces." Ask each student to unfold the paper and glue a construction paper circle as a caterpillar head on the first face. Ask students to decorate the head with crayons or markers. Have each student write C on the first face of the paper. Ask each student to write A on the second face and continue writing letters on faces until they have spelled caterpillar. For each letter, have students think of a food that a caterpillar might eat such as C-cabbage, A-apple, and T-tomato. Invite the students to write the words and illustrate them next to their letters. Ask students to staple their caterpillars to construction paper so they pop out. Display the caterpillars on a bulletin board titled What Do Caterpillars Eat For Lunch?
